Lumbar Disc Herniation

Condition/Diagnosis: Disc Herniation

Overview: A herniated disk occurs when the soft cushioning (disk) in between the bones in the spines gets pushed out of the space in between the two bones. This can occur at the lumbar, cervical and thoracic spine.

Symptoms: A herniated disk can cause:
-Back Pain
-Arm or Leg Pain
-Muscle Spasms
-Problems with controlling your bowel/bladder function

Treatments: CBSI tries to maximize conservative treatments before considering surgery. We will utilize epidural steroid injections and rehab therapy before considering surgical interventions. Many people who have a herniated disk do not need surgery to correct the problem because the body often corrects this problem on its own. However, medication can be used for pain management as well. If surgery is the best option a surgeon will utilize minimally invasive techniques to remove the portion of the disk that has slipped, which should relieve symptoms.
