Lumbar Compression Fractures

Condition/Diagnosis: Lumbar Compression Fractures

Overview: A fracture or break in one of the five bones in the lumbar spine. These bones are the strongest in the entire spine, but they can break. Most commonly these fractures are due to osteoporosis or a weakening of the bones.

Symptoms:
-Sudden, severe back pain
-Worsening of pain when standing or walking
-Some pain relief when lying down
-Difficulty and pain when bending or twisting
-Loss of height

Treatments: Medications for pain management are available as well as surgery to address this problem. If a patient fails conservative management, they may be a candidate for Kyphoplasty or Vertebroplasty.
